I do not know how to react to this...

I thought all year that he really committed suicide, but it turned out that he had to go through a very difficult period of his life, when he was very hurt. His girl is died, he had been with for a very long time. I can't imagine what he had to go through, or how he got through it.

I don't quite know how to react to this correctly, because I can't understand him in any way, since I've never experienced something like this, so I can't judge him in any way.

While this person is completely unknown to me, I am glad to learn that somebody you care about (and presumed dead) is still alive.

If I was in your shoes I would probably write a PM essentially saying "I thought you were dead and I am _so_ happy to learn I was wrong!"
My guess would be that they are getting a lot of PMs like that right now, so a reply might take a while.
