AI Music

Posted by G2961 - May 1st, 2024

I'm starting to get creeped out by AI music because it has literally taken over the Newgrounds audio portal. I found about 129 AI songs that shouldn't be there. I remember even same music was on the main page of Newgrounds, it really freaked me out because I thought “Why am I spending 2 hours a day on new songs when in 1-2 minutes some neural network can generate a song that will even make it to the main page of the fucking creation site?”, but that rarely happens nowadays

We're amidst a war and I didn't even notice it lol.

It's kinda cool to see other people pointing out at ai songs, it can be pretty easy to be fooled sometimes. If you didn't mention the Soundful one, I probably wouldn't have noticed it, even though I actually tried the service.

Yes, and the war is serious.

Yes, the death of AI! I've tried a lot of neural networks to generate music, so I can almost always hear them

AI will never ever have the same feelings artists and producers make in their creations, it's the genuine work and effort that we take to make our ideas come to life that makes art enjoyable in all of its forms, I really hope AI stops being used like this, until then let's all keep making music and art and enjoy the process of it!

Death to the soulless AI on the website for creativity!!!

And you can’t tell if it’s ai! I really hope that ai stops taking away peoples opportunities of getting frontpaged (that’s my biggest goal rn). More people should start paying attention to this “crisis”, and ai should shut the hell up.

I hope that some of your songs will make it to the main page. it took me 7 months to do this, but then after some time, my other songs started to get on the main page often

Well that's just great, I hope AIbros leave this site and off themselves, their slop doesn't belong anywhere near here.

I hope so too, but there are only more of them

It's gotten really, really bad. The worst case of it is when a user named Fate got away with AI music for months, with multiple of his songs frontpaged. He was an old user too, and it was sickening to see him go the way of your average GD reuploader and/or AI bro. Thanks for hunting all those songs btw; I've been doing so for about a month now. There's just so many.

Yes, I remember that asshole.
You're welcome, I'm interested in looking for it all myself

Where did you find the entries? Published or Unpublished artists?

Both

@G2961 Man, smelly dribblelip underages are a plague. Just 5-iving any lazy remix or played out spam song they find. Guess it's not going to be as easy as i thought, finding and reporting these things.

I feel the exact same way, im proud to suck bc at least I make my suck yknow

for me stem separation is a great way to learn song structure and stuff, but its never okay to have AI write music for you unless you programmed the neural network yourself and trained it on only things you made, then I guess there's an argument there, but we all know nobodies doing that LOL.

AI in general is a great tool for analyzing things and for inspiration I suppose (I prefer to just make ideas myself lmao), and if you think about it is a similar situation to like sampling and stuff. A thought experiment could be if you for example AI generated a drum sample, and then manipulated it heavily to the point where its unrecognizable, would it be your own thing? It makes me wonder what exactly the threshold is for creative integrity.

To answer that question, I usually look at what the creators intentions are. You can usually tell if someone is really trying to be creative and transformative and when they aren't. I myself have used samples in my music because it is convenient, but I limit myself to drum samples and one shots. When I look at some artists, their entire composition is a drag and drop from Splice, and personally I think that is just as bad as AI generated music. It's the same problem.

Music is about self expression and you aren't expressing shit when you are having somebody else or something else do it for you.

Hence why I'm kind of taking a break right now, I feel like my technical skill does not match what my brain wants to create, my ultimate goal is to learn the guitar and make my music feel real. Instead of turning to AI or heavy sampling I am instead going to embrace the suck and power through.

(sorry I had a lot to say)

I absolutely agree with you! indeed, loops are not so good either, but AI music is much worse, since you literally do nothing In the song itself, but you can get it quickly and not strain yourself. I agree with your statement that music is a means of expressing emotions, not a set of samples and loops. but unfortunately we will have to go through all this.

I don't think that AI could fully replace a real musician cuz now it doesn't have such versatility and control in their actions. But i can agree with idea to keep them on a short leash just for keeping AI as tool but not the Individual creator or something.
Probably it would be nice if there will be detached rules for AI posts, for more-less their limitations or prohibitions.

I have more concerns about the videogame industry where these neural networks could possibly be improved and in that kind of way decrease the influence and value of such jobs as sound design or music composing. It will be such a collapse despite the fact that small indie developers already would prefer royalty free or ready-made compositions (e.g. Kevin McLeod, nothing personal but just an example) rather find some people who could make distinct sound for their project. And while AI getting better day after day, this could completely take away a lot of work because it's cheap (P.S: Even now it's too difficult to find at least single job vacancy which could worth it)

Yes, AI can replace everything soon. unfortunately, nothing can be done about it, just accept it. I hope that AI will not become so high-quality and it will not be able to affect me in the future

It sucks man, I literally have to ask if they use ai and for proof before scouting someone! It’s better to suck then to be lazy!

It really sucks. but apparently many people think that they can safely deceive people on this site.

@MrMcMusic I have a feeling I’m not making a frontpage unless I make a huge inspiration list like my song zethra, or I collab with wilidacious lol.

You got it :)

This genuinely sucks. Now, just because of this, people have to do extensive questioning for this stuff now, which hasn't been done before up until this point. It's actually lazy.

Yes, but unfortunately such measures will soon be the norm

have to agree here.
the audio stuff neural networks generate may occasionally sound unique, funny, hilarious and all, but uploading it here on newgrounds for example... hell no. i support the strict policy regarding ai music because it's not something you made, it's entirely machine-generated. the network builds, arranges, mixes & masters it all just on it's own, it's not you spending a lot of time in DAW to make it yourself, it's NOT YOUR work, it's... "nanomachines, son!"

I totally agree with you, because really, this shit shouldn't be here, especially when they try to pass this shit off as their own, it's annoying.

Holy shit fr??? I haven't noticed (ToT)

Unfortunately, you would have found out anyway, as these AI are gaining momentum, and unfortunately it spoils this site for creativity :(

What scares me a lot is that with the pass of time, the AI will make less and less errors and it will make more difficult to say if "x" audio was made with AI or not.

Yes, soon we will not be needed at all, soon we will lose our activities altogether :(

yeah, this is "revolutionary" like imagine using just some random lyrics and themes and you creating a banger in like minutes, even brainrot lyrics you can make banger, this can cause controversy and replace alot of artists like Kanye West, Taylor Swift with some emotionless AI's.

yes, the main problem is that AI can replace the really real work of a person and the emotions that a person conveys in music

I think part of why the topic of 'AI generated audio files' does not get as much attention is that the people who would have a ton to say about the topic have kind of burned themselves out replying to the [n]-th post about 'prompt "artists"' publishing 'computer generated images' (that stuff is no art!) based on _stolen_ works which are never credited - an illegal practice known as "plagiarism".

At this point I would normally say something such as "but I digress..." - however in my understanding of international copyright treaties* those AI-generated files are a 'legal' issue.

I have the impression that right now, places that accept submissions 'in good faith' will have a ton of issues later. As @G2961 said: That stuff is quickly generated, whereas a genuine artist cannot be (feasibly) bothered to turn a camera on every time they pour endless hours into making a song or image to prove it's their own original idea and they actually used input devices to create it.

In the end, this is the kind of battle that can be won in two ways:
1) In court. Just like the music- and film-industry have been doing it for decades.
2) Through support. And that would require users to care. Maybe even to vote and reviews with a little more delicacy than the "5 stars lol"/"0 stars lol"-crowd, so others may develop more of an awareness for nuances and complexities of--
Good grief, we're doomed, aren't we...?

You're absolutely right! I agree with you 100%! unfortunately, yes, this war will last for a long time, and only the court can somehow help, or if this neural network becomes paid, but then free analogues will appear, and then free analogues with high quality.

@G2961 True.

@G2961 call me a fucking retard!
